The Dallas Gem and Mineral Society Scholarship
at the University of Texas at Dallas
The relationship between the Dallas Gem and Mineral Society and the University of Texas at Dallas has a long and treasured history. It began in 1969 when geosciences professor Dr. James Carter attended the Society’s gem and mineral show and established a friendship with many of the members. Dr. Carter became a fixture at the shows each year, and the bond between the two organizations soon solidified.
In 1989, members of the Dallas Gem and Mineral Society donated $16,000 to the Department of Geosciences at UT Dallas to establish an endowed scholarship in support of full-time undergraduate and graduate students studying Earth sciences. Since that original contribution, the fund has continued to grow through additional donations from the members. Over 50 students have received scholarship support since the endowment was established.
The Dallas Gem and Mineral Society is proud of its ongoing relationship with UT Dallas and that contributions from our members have helped many students succeed in their education and careers. Continued support of this scholarship fund – and the university – is a great way for members to promote interest in geology and Earth sciences among the next generation, ensuring a continued pipeline of professionals and enthusiasts for years to come.
